Dunham began to show interest in being a ventriloquist after receiving a Mortimer Snerd puppet as a Christmas present at the young age of 8. He borrowed Jimmy Nelson's Instant Ventriloquism from the library and examined Edgar Bergen's routines. Dunham practiced in front of the mirror for long hours. Between ages 12 to 13, Dunham regularly attended a yearly international conference for ventriloquists called the Vent Haven ConVENTion where he often joined competitions to the point of having to be dubbed a “retired champion” by the organizers, to give chances to other contenders. Like Edgar Bergen and Señor Wences, Dunham was given a spot at the Vent Haven Museum.
Dunham began publicly performing during his teenage years, starting from church and schools, branching out to banquets which included the likes of Roger Staubach, quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. Eventually he participated in a Broadway show with Mickey Rooney, and appeared in television shows like The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Dunham was a regular at Comedy Central where he soon had a steady following.
